Students Learning from Students by Teri COOR ISD - On 3/2/2002, sixteen of Fairview's Kindergarten through sixth graders took part in a program presented by the Bronx Zoo called "Junior Zoo Guides". The one time event consisted of
Each group consisted of a presenter, a cameraman, and a producer. For several weeks, the 7th graders were assisted by the Bronx Zoo to become "experts" on an animal and their habitat. They also had to learn how to operate the camera and other video conferencing equipment. The culminating activity was for them to present a 20 minute program on what they learned. Each program featured a live animal (handled by zoo personnel) and a question and answer opportunity. At the end, the presenter introduced the team and thanked the audience. Brenda Kauffman, the instructor overseeing the students for the event added this comment after the event. "The students who attended the virtual zoo trip really enjoyed it and learned from it. I have heard today from other teachers that those students are telling everyone else how much they enjoyed it. The prizes were great too! I'm sure we'll have standing room only at the next one." Fairview's District Scheduler, Betty Handrich, also attended the event. She said "I found it really fun. The kids loved it. They couldn't believe they could talk to the TV. Teri did a fine job of introducing the field trip and setting the stage for the program. Hopefully this will give us a good incentive to continue virtual field trips." Afterwards, when I asked the Fairview students if they enjoyed themselves the responses were enthusiastic "Yeahs!" Considering they came in on a Saturday morning before the snowstorm to participate, I definitely believe them! |
